Coastal California Photographers Gets a Little More Social
Let’s face it. We photographers have a lot of things to keep track of. Cameras, lenses, batteries, memory cards, tripods, filters, Lightroom, Photoshop, and that mysterious setting we changed three weeks ago that we now cannot remember how to change back.
And now, Coastal California Photographers is adding one more useful tool to the photographer’s toolbox: WhatsApp.
We are setting up a Coastal California Photographers WhatsApp group to give our members another easy way to stay connected, share information, ask questions, and keep up with what is happening in our photographic community.
So, What Is WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is a free messaging application that works on smartphones and computers. Once you download the app and create your account, you can communicate with other members through text messages, photographs, videos, voice messages, and even phone or video calls.
Best of all, it allows information to travel almost as quickly as light through a camera lens.
Well... almost.
What Can We Use It For?
Quite a bit.
Upcoming Events
Need a reminder that there is a photo outing coming up Saturday? Want to know where everyone is meeting? Have a last-minute change in plans because Mother Nature decided to rearrange the weather?
WhatsApp gives us a quick way to get that information out to members.
Ask a Photography Question
Ever find yourself standing in the camera store holding a lens and thinking, "Does anybody actually know if this thing is any good?"
Now you can ask your fellow CCP photographers.
Members can share their experiences with cameras, lenses, tripods, lighting equipment, software, accessories, and just about anything else related to photography. Sometimes the best advice comes from somebody who has already spent the money and discovered what works... or what doesn't.
Share Photographs and Ideas
WhatsApp makes it easy to share photographs directly with the group. Perhaps you found an interesting location, discovered a great sunrise, or captured an image you simply cannot wait to show somebody.
Post it.
Photography is meant to be shared, and a little conversation about an image can often lead to a whole lot of learning.
Camera Equipment For Sale
Have a lens sitting in the closet that has not seen daylight since 2019?
Maybe another member is looking for exactly what you have.
The WhatsApp group can also provide a convenient place for members to let others know when they have photography equipment they would like to sell or are looking to purchase. It gives our members an opportunity to connect with fellow photographers before sending that perfectly good lens off to some stranger on the internet.
Naturally, buyers and sellers will be responsible for making their own arrangements and decisions.
Getting Started Is Easy
If you have never used WhatsApp before, don't let the name intimidate you. You don't need to be a computer expert, and you certainly don't need to earn a degree in smartphoneology.
Simply go to your phone's app store, search for WhatsApp Messenger, and download the free app. Follow the setup instructions, verify your phone number, and you're ready to go. Scan the code below or email me at pramar01@gmail.com and I will send you the invite.

Once you are invited to the Coastal California Photographers group, you can jump right into the conversation. Just remember be cordial, be respectful, watch language and no politics.
And if you already use WhatsApp, you're way ahead of the game.
Another Way to Stay Connected
Our website, newsletters, email messages, workshops, outings, and other activities will continue to be important ways for Coastal California Photographers to communicate. WhatsApp is simply another tool we can use when something needs to be shared quickly.
Think of it as the photographer's version of tapping someone on the shoulder and saying, "Hey, did you hear about this?"
Only now, you can tap them from your phone.
The goal is simple: better communication, more interaction, and a stronger photographic community.
So download the app, join the conversation, and let's see where this new communication tool takes us.
Just remember: if someone posts a photograph of a spectacular sunset, you are officially allowed to be jealous.
You are also officially allowed to ask where they took it.
